Our members range from the casual weekend gardener to botanists and horticulturists, those who have ten varieties of hostas in their gardens to those with over 2000 varieties! Our diverse membership includes professional nurserymen who have dedicated their careers to this genus and those who are the pioneers of hosta development and research. In other words our members include every level of involvement in the genus hosta. If you want the correct most current information, this is where to get it.
As you learn more about hostas, you may, like many of us, discover you’d like to know even more. Perhaps you’d like to meet others with the same interest, share ideas, information, and plants! The Regional Activities section can provide information on a more local level. Here you can connect with local hosta societies near your home. You can discover what activities will be in your local area and who to contact. Most groups have several meetings a year, send out newsletters full of information, and would very much like to share their interest in hostas with you.
The American Hosta Society is the national society. Benefits to belonging to this organization are many, and we are continually striving to offer our members even more. Each summer, our National Convention is hosted by one of the many local hosta societies located throughout the country. We tour fabulous gardens, view hundreds of hosta leaves in our Hosta Show, and have an auction of plants. Conventions also include vendors where you may purchase many of the newest hosta varieties as well as some of the tried and true classics. Some venders also sell companion plants and other garden related items. Clinics about judging hosta shows, viewing educational displays and lectures are also convention activities. This is all done while meeting new friends, reconnecting with old ones, and having a great time! After all, the hosta is affectionately known as the “friendship plant”.
Another benefit of the AHS is our crown jewel, The Hosta Journal. It is published three times per year and is second to none in the world of horticultural publications. It rivals, in fact surpasses, many commercially available publications. It is full of timely articles and magnificent color photographs; its content appeals to the novice as well as the expert. Past collectors issues are currently still available for purchase, and the information within them continues to be timely and valuable. I would urge you to consider purchasing some of these for your hosta library.
Our membership includes people from throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as many other countries-England, Germany, Holland, Japan and New Zealand (to name a few).
Another great source of information is The Hosta Adventure a 32-page publication, compiled by our own expert volunteers. It is a hosta primer including information on all areas of hosta culture. This too is available for purchase.
As you continue through our website, I hope you find it enjoyable and informative. And should you decide to join the AHS, please know that the greatest benefit to membership truly is the friendships you will make. You can become a member of AHS without even leaving the site! We have a secure credit card shopping system. Save some money and consider joining for three years.
By the way, don’t forget to visit our store where you can purchase other hosta-related items.
I’d love to meet you at one of our annual conventions or other regional meetings. One can never have too many hosta friends!
Sincerely,
Tom Micheletti
