Post Late spring frost effect on hostas
The temperature is going to fall below freezing tonight and for the next several nights to 21F. What will the effect be on the hostas in the early stage of coming from the ground.

21*F is awful cold! If the hosta eyes are just starting to show above ground, they may be ok. If they are up very far, though, the outlook is not so good. If they do freeze, the plants will sent up new eyes. They will be smaller than normal this year, but they will survive.

The hostas are about 75% leafed out here in Iowa and we have a good shot at frost tonight, too. Way too many to cover, so I'm hoping for the best!

Good luck!

Hi Folks,
I 'm not sure how everyone coping with this early spring but we got hit with some frost last night. It was 28 in southern Maine and I believe 22 up north. Heard it's going to be colder tonight. Most of my big leaf hosta got hit hard. Some took it better then others. I'm not sure what I'm suppose to do. I'm pretty sure the plants are resilient , after tonight time will tell. -Dash

Hello all....Just enjoying the sweltering summer and I was wondering....how did everyone's plants fare with the really cold weather some of you got after your Hostas had sprouted??? Were they set back...or did they die? Pat

Hi Pat,
Everything seemed to bounce back real well. I cleaned them up in late May after the next set of leaves started and most look really good some a bit smaller than expected. -Dash

Hi Dash, Thanks for the update....sorry they are a bit smaller than normal, but I suppose that's to be expected. AND, the really good news is that they didn't die! :D Continued happy growing! Pat
