I have some thick roots with smaller roots coming out of them
There are a relatively small number of hosta that are stoloniferous; they send out horizontal stems from which new independent hosta arise, H.clausa. This is well known but not common with hosta.
In tissue culture they work with the crown unless someone is working with root material and haven't published those results.
Don't think is will work unless you are dealing with a stoloniferous variety.
This is a stoloniferous plant H.'Stilleto';
the crown; on the right with the leaves growing up
the stolon; the thick root looking part from which the crown developed
the roots; smaller thinner parts
