Alex is the first recipient of this award designed to recognize a member of the AHS for having given outstanding service toward the development and improving of the genus Hosta or the society or both. It was originally designed as a biennial award as conventions were being held biennially.

“for his introducing the group of mainly blue-leaved hybrids called tardianas, resulting from the crossing of H. tardiflora with H. sieboldiana ‘Elegans’ as well as for introducing many other noteworthy hybrids.
